Camp is one session only: Monday, June 17, 7:30-11am (the first day starts 30 minutes early for check-in); Tuesday, June 18 - Thursday, June 20, and Monday, June 24 – Thursday, June 27, 8-11am. 

Rising Stars Discovery Camp is a fun, exciting introduction to just a few of the unique courses offered at Ben Barber Career and Technology Academy. This program is available exclusively to Mansfield I.S.D. students entering 6th, 7th, and 8th grades in the coming school year (2013-14). Deadline for registration PAYMENT is close of business, Friday, May 24.

Non-refundable tuition per student is $65 ($35 for students participating in the reduced lunch program; there are limited full scholarships for those students who are participants in the free lunch program).

2013 Course Offerings:

FULL as of 4/26 CSI: Forensics Grab your lab coat and gloves and get ready to do some crime scene investigation! Learn how to use basic crime scene techniques such as in-the-field tests to indicate the presence of blood at a homicide from bloodstain patterns that YOU can learn how to interpret. Learn how to lift latent INVISIBLE prints from surfaces at a crime scene and use photography to let the crime scene tell the story! Learn how professionals actually use real evidence gathered at a crime scene to catch a criminal! By the end of the week, you’ll know more about crime scene investigation than the actors on CSI!

FULL as of 5/20 Culinary Arts Put on your toque and get ready to create! Learn how to cook some of our Bistro favorites and get a taste of what it is like to be a professional chef. As a Rising Star Chef, you will learn basic cooking and baking skills in a commercial kitchen environment and begin to feel confident in planning and cooking impressive dishes for your friends and family. The last day of camp will feature YOU and your creations in our Grand Buffet! (Closed toe shoes and long pants required)

FULL as of 5/14 Discover Engineering In Engineering Basics, students will experience engineering through hands-on, creative investigations and building activities including design modeling. The goal of the camp is not only to show students what engineering is all about but also to expose them to the fact that “engineers’ work” is all around them.

FULL as of 4/17 GameOn!  Do have game? You will after completing this hands-on game development experience. Learn how to design and develop a simple game in a drag-and-drop environment (like Scratch) to learn basic computer programming skills and game concepts.  We will also learn to evaluate what makes a game good and have a contest to pick the best game(s) created by the students in the class. Come find your game!

CANCELLED German Language and Culture Are you ready for fun adventures in German? It can really benefit you to brush up on your German skills in this fun, upbeat class! Learn about German-speaking culture and how to say a few things in this class. You would be surprised how easy it is to learn German!

FULL as of 5/14 Greek Mythology Camp Do you love Greek Mythology? Join Camp Half-Blood! We will spend two weeks diving into Greek mythology!  Every day will include academic, artistic and athletic events that relate to Greek and Roman culture!  Don’t be left behind and let Medusa turn you into stone! CANCELLED Intro to Agricultural Science Every day one person makes a huge impact on the agriculture industry even if they have never been to a farm. Please join us at the Reed Stewart Agriculture Center (the “Ag Barn”) to learn how you make this impact. We will focus on everything from the food you eat, animals in the field and in your back yard, plants and wildlife.

FULL as of 4/24 Intro to Health Sciences Ever think,” Wow, House is really pretty cool!?!” Ever wonder what it takes to get into the medical field? We are going to get a good idea of what is available in Health Science, and how to get you on your path to being a doctor, nurse, therapist, or lab rat! You will get a chance to do all of the following: 2 days exploring anatomy (with dissection of fetal pigs); 2 days of Basic medical skills and CPR with certification and card; 2 days exploring EMT skills and first Aid; 1 day exploring Microbiology; 1 day in the Hospital Skills lab with the interactive manikins. Yes, the manikins can speak and cry! Get ready, it’s gonna be fast and fun!!! Students will be required to purchase and wear scrubs with tennis shoes (and should wear a watch with a second hand).

CANCELLED Introduction to Scrapbooking Do you have photos? Do you have artwork? Do you have birthday cards? Do you have memories? Grab your toolkit and come learn how to create a portfolio of your best work, document an event, and make a scrapbook. Basic techniques for layouts and arranging materials will be taught along with embellishing tools. Campers will complete a variety of scrapbooking and stamping projects.
